- We were looking for affordable locations that have the option of cooking your own meal (a hostel kitchen, or a self-contained unit). We didn't want to eat out every evening;
- Not all hostels in New-Zealand are family-friendly; quite a number of them don't allow children;
- New-Zealand is expensive. A family room in a hostel or a self-contained unit at a holiday park costs at least $100 dollar and up to $150 dollar per night (depending of the location and facilities);
- Maybe because of our wishes and demands we had to book ahead months (up to a year) in advance.
All the places we stayed can be found on the map here.
The best places we stayed were:
- White Elephant Backpackers hostel, Motueka. Lovely garden, great kitchen facilities.
- Bradshaws Lodge, Taupo. Great atmosphere, comfortable rooms and space, well-equipped kitchen.
